William H. McAfee, Jr.
Bill McAfee, Founder, was President and Chief Investment Officer for WHM Capital Advisors until his untimely death in January 2012.
Bill was a Certified Financial Planner™ and an Accredited Valuation Analyst with expertise in business valuation, succession planning strategies, portfolio management, and quantitative analysis. He had been published in professional journals on topics including business investment strategies and business valuation issues, and was a featured guest on radio and television programs.
Bill began his financial career in commercial banking and held the position of Vice President at Bank of America Private Bank, managing accounts for high-net-worth individuals, trusts and foundations. In 1999, he was named Senior Vice President at First National Corporation, where he chaired the Trust and Investment Committee and designed portfolio strategies for the Asset Management Group. His portfolio strategies consistently outperformed risk/return measures in both up and down markets.
Along with other WHM advisors, Bill had extensive experience working with business owners to determine their overall financial strategy, how business ownership correlates with their financial plan, and how to preserve their wealth through coordinated investment and business planning strategies.
Bill developed A.Q.U.A.®, an analysis tool for determining risk in business and investment assets and the effect of calculated risk on portfolio allocation. A.Q.U.A. ® is part of the enduring legacy Bill left to WHM Capital Advisors and its clients.
Bill was a graduate of The Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina where he was a Battalion Executive Officer and Distinguished Naval Student, as well as an honor graduate of the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. He also served for 5 years on the adjunct faculty at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina and was the Chairman of the SC Club for Growth.
Bill left behind an enduring legacy. WHM Capital Advisors was built on a solid foundation and continues to serve its clients with expertise, confidence, and vision.

John H. Barnes
Chief Operating Officer
John Barnes is the Chief Operating Officer for WHM Capital Advisors. John is a Certified Financial Planner™ and oversees implementation of clients’ financial strategies. He also has duties in portfolio management, operations and regulatory compliance.
John works primarily with individual private clients to help them coordinate all aspects of their overall financial situation, and to optimize investment portfolios to meet the clients’ objectives.
John began his career at Wachovia Bank, N.A. where he held the title of Vice President. During his time there he held several management positions and most recently was part of a process team overseeing Securities Operations with Wachovia Securities, LLC.
John is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is active in his community and serves on the local board of Young Life. John and his wife, Jennifer live in Columbia, South Carolina with their three children.
Senior Vice President
James R. Landacre is Senior Vice President for WHM Capital Advisors. He is a Certified Financial Planner™ and Certified Public Accountant. He has been working with high net worth families for over 25 years and has been working in the financial industry since 1970.
Jim began his financial career in 1970 in Charlotte, NC with international accounting firm Price Waterhouse & Co. (now Price Waterhouse Coopers). In 1973 he became a Certified Public Accountant with a concentration in income tax and financial planning. After years of working with several other CPA firms and starting his own firm in 1980 (and selling his interest in it in 1985), Jim opened First Planning Group, the area's first fee-only financial counseling. By 1987, Jim had become a Certified Financial Planner™, and was able to continue to serve his clients from Alabama to Maryland. In 2010, after the merger of First Planning Group and WHM Capital Advisors, Jim became the Senior Vice President of WHM Capital Advisors.
Jim is a graduate of Marshall University. He actively lectures and teaches personal finance to church and professional groups. Jim is also the Treasurer and Board Member of the Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center in Greensboro, NC. He has four children and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Matthew A. Morley
Chief Investment Officer
Matthew Morley is the Chief Investment Officer at the firm. His primary responsibilities are investment research and business analysis. Matt also coordinates engagement work product for the firm's corporate and institutional clients. Previously, he served as a Research Analyst for the firm. Matt is a graduate of the University of South Carolina.
Prior to completing his education, from June of 2004 to December of 2007 Matt held the position of Research Intern at the firm. In addition to his internship, he worked as a lab assistant in the Department of Sociology at USC, studying theories of social interaction in exchange networks and group processes. From 1999 through 2003, Matt lived and studied in Bonn, Germany. He has traveled western and eastern Europe extensively, as well as southeast China. Matt currently resides in Irmo, South Carolina with his wife Rebekah and their three daughters.
George Francis O'Brien, III
Frank O’Brien is a Managing Director for WHM Capital Advisors. Frank is a Certified Financial Planner™ and manages the firm’s Greenville, South Carolina office. He works primarily with private clients and families to design financial strategies and manage both liquid and illiquid assets.
Frank began his career in corporate banking working for NCNB in 1986. He later worked with Wachovia Wealth Management for 10 years. Prior to joining the firm Frank most recently served as Managing Director of South Carolina Private Wealth for SunTrust Banks.
Frank is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his degree in Economics. He currently serves as Chairman of the Palmetto Society of the United Way, as a member of the boards of the United Way of Greenville County, the Storm Eye Institute at MUSC, and for the YMCA’s Camp Greenville. He is also Co-chair of the Ministries Leadership Team at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Frank and his wife, Linda, live in Greenville, South Carolina with their two children.
Daniel R. D'Alberto
Dan D’Alberto is a Managing Director in the Columbia, South Carolina office of WHM Capital Advisors where he works on business and financial solutions for banks, hospitals, and other publicly and privately held corporate entities.
Prior to joining the firm, Dan was an attorney with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP. There, he gained a variety of experience advising businesses regarding complex commercial and financial matters. He advised public and private companies and their officers and directors on a broad range of issues regarding litigation risk management, taxation, commercial and insurance contracts, and corporate compliance matters.
Dan is a graduate of the South Carolina Honors College where he received his degree in Political Science. He later earned a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors for SC Economics and the SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center, and is chairperson of the Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society of the Midlands. He also serves on the Alumni Council for the University of South Carolina College of Arts & Sciences and the Development Committee of the South Carolina Philharmonic.
In 2011, Dan was named to the “20 Under 40” list of young professionals by The State Newspaper and also received the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award from the University of South Carolina College of Arts & Sciences. Dan and his wife, Mandy, live in Columbia, South Carolina with their two boys.
Senior Portfolio Manager
Bill Mitchell is the Senior Portfolio Manager for WHM Capital Advisors, LLC. With over two decades of experience in financial services, Bill Mitchell is a veteran of the investment industry, having worked with both institutional and individual investors through numerous market cycles
Bill began his financial career in 1992 as Chief Equity Strategist for Elliott Wave International in Gainesville, GA, covering major world equity, currency, commodity and interest rate markets. Here, Bill provided comprehensive analysis of all global stock markets. His clients included fund managers and most major financial institutions around the world, including members of Barron’s Roundtable. Prior to joining the firm, Bill most recently worked for Wells Fargo Advisors, managing money for individual families and small businesses.
Bill graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia with majors in Finance and Spanish. Away from the office, Bill has served as the President of the Alumni Board for Christ Church Episcopal School as well as the Steering Committee for Young Life – Greenville. Bill is a native of Greenville and resides locally with his wife Bentley.
Client Service Manager
Hillary Stilwell is a Client Service Manager at the firm. Her primary responsibilities include ensuring that the client’s needs are met and managing office efficiency and business development. Previous to becoming a client service manager at the firm, Hillary was in outside sales and customer satisfaction for various companies. Hillary graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a degree in Psychology. She and her husband Dan live in Columbia, South Carolina with their two children.
Lisa Looney is the Office Manager for WHM Capital Advisors. In this role her primary responsibilities involve, human resource management, payroll management, and bookkeeping. In this capacity she maintains office operations through, internal accounting, benefits administration and payroll management.
Prior to becoming a Client Service Manager for the firm, she worked in the insurance industry for 11 years. Lisa is originally from Warwick, Rhode Island and moved to South Carolina in 1997.
She currently resides in Lexington, South Carolina with her husband Robert and their two children.
Client Service Associate
Savannah Lawner is a Client Service Associate for WHM Capital Advisors. Her primary responsibilities include facilitating client requests and assisting with a variety of administrative duties. Prior to becoming a Client Service Associate for the firm, she worked as a marketing and research assistant for Post No Bills, Inc. Savannah graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina earning a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration with a double major in Management and Marketing. She and her husband Martin currently reside in Columbia, South Carolina.
